The nearest historical analog I can come up with are the Paris Peace Talks.  And those lasted five years, even though they ended with the U.S. just walking away after 5 more years of useless war. This fiasco is the cherry on the shitcake of this entire effort. Trump said recently that NATO is a paper tiger. The paper tiger is us. The “superpowers” are not super. Ukraine is turning the tide on Russia. Iran stood us down, and now we’ve pissed ourselves and gone home rather than just change our pants. And what’s our alternative? More useless bombing? More Tomahawks fired, at the cost of $1 million apiece? More depletion of our stockpile that made us Master of the Universe? A naval blockade of the naval blockade?

Trump is not the cause of our national failures, Trump is the culmination. He is not destroying our democracy single-handedly; this is what we’ve been working on since LBJ defeated Goldwater.
