What Is It About Rich Sex Offenders?

Ghislaine Maxwell is now in a federal “camp” in Texas, about an hour’s drive from me (I just made the drive today, coincidentally. But not to the federal prison. I didn’t even know it’s there. I was in the next town, at the GHWBush museum, looking at a Springsteen curated exhibit on American music.). This is very unusual:

The reason for the move is listed as a “lesser security transfer” (code 308) according to a transfer document I reviewed, which is completely inappropriate of for inmates who are in the early stages of serving their sentences, according to another source. “This is such obvious corruption. I have never seen this before,” said another person at BOP familiar with the situation.
Her lawyer, I understand, announced this today, after Trump had gone to New Jersey to win another course championship. Conveniently, that course doesn’t have a huge facility where the press can gather to ask questions. Conveniently, Trump can’t be asked about this.

Because a sex offender can’t be moved to minimum security without a waiver. We actually had a convicted sex offender living on our street, when my daughter was younger and lived with us (she’s in her 30’s now). He moved in, and came down to tell us he was a registered sex offender. He was required by law to tell us.

Just to say, that’s serious shit. (He moved away earlier this year. The house was in terrible condition, it was razed, there’s a grassy lot there, now.  I assume sex offenders are not the most desirable employees. He never seemed to have much money.)

But Trump is making a “deal,” which I still think shows how clueless, tone-deaf, and just flat demented he is. Nothing good is going to come of this. Not for him; not for anyone.

Except maybe for Maxwell. A pardon is definitely in the cards for her. The only silver lining in that cloud is how much serious, serious damage that will do to Trump.

It’s not enough, though. This is still a very dark cloud.
