The only restraint is impeachment and removal from office. Congress has never removed a President, and won’t now. Even if the midterms are a rout, an absolute cleansing of the Augean stables, it won’t be enough. 2/3rds of the Senate will still remain. And they won’t take the lesson.
So there is no remedy for this. We gave the toddler the shotgun. Again. All excuses for why we did that are irrelevant. We did. This is all on us. That’s how responsibility works.
