The situation on the ground

The Word, from TJ:

Someone in the thread below said something about how even Joe Scarborough admits that many of the people trapped there couldn't afford gas to get out.

Just wanted to point out for those who didn't know, that most of the gas stations in new orleans were out of gas when we left. We filled up first thing saturday am when we realized what was happening. people who didn't have televisions or who don't watch the news had no clue that gas was disappearing.

as we were driving down carrollton to I-10 we passed several stations with bags over the pumps and only one that had gas--with HUNDREDS of cars lined up to get gas as they were trying head out of town.

the federal government did absolutely nothing to assist in the pre-hurricane evacuation. it was all left up to the states. they did a good job considering the circumstances, but the feds could have airlifted and trained and bussed people out of there if they had taken the situation seriously.
But remember: despite the fact New Orleans officials gave orders to evacuate, the President says no one could have foreseen a levee break.

I'll retire to Bedlam.
