“My critics are political people...these are people looking for political gain...as much as possible I’ve tried to stay out of that” - Trump just now.— Jim Sciutto (@jimsciutto) August 7, 2019
The Reconciler-in-Chief is going to pour healing balm on a city's wounds:
[Trump] quickly pivoted to talking about the work police in the city had done and called his trip “a terrific opportunity really to congratulate some of the police and law enforcement.”
The president then added that “the job they’ve done was incredible.”
“Mr. President, the hatred of the El Paso shooting didn't come from our city.” Powerful message from editor of @elpasotimes Tim Archuleta about El Paso community and neighbors in Juarez. https://t.co/ZDpTn4ufq4 pic.twitter.com/6G9VOE50Uj— Greg Burton (@gburton) August 7, 2019
Because he's the same person he was before the shootings:
The short answer is: "No. Not only 'no,' but 'Hell, no!' "
“You and the shooter in El Paso used that same language,” said the unidentified reporter. “Do you regret that?”
The short answer is: "No. Not only 'no,' but 'Hell, no!' "
“I think that illegal immigration — you’re talking about illegal immigration?” Trump said. “I think illegal immigration is a terrible thing for this country. I think you have to come in legally. Ideally you have to come in through merit. We need people coming in because we have many companies coming into our country, they’re pouring in.Most of the people shot in El Paso were not "illegal immigrants." The border situation is much more complicated than that. As people in El Paso have been saying, this has been their way of life for 350 years. Trump is constitutionally incapable of understanding that. All he sees is race, all he understands is xenophobia.
“I think illegal immigration is a very bad thing for our country,” he continued. “I think open borders area a very bad thing for our country, and we’re stopping. We’re building a wall right now, we won the lawsuit in the Supreme Court two weeks ago, the wall is well under construction, it’s being built at a rapid pace. We need that.”
