New Interview: I talked to Thomas Chatterton Williams about his role in writing the Harper’s letter, the debate over cancel culture, and his issues with Black Lives Matter & the media’s coverage of coronavirus. https://t.co/ic0JXKOIVr— Isaac Chotiner (@IChotiner) July 22, 2020
This is very interesting and I do recommend it (took me back to my seminary days, when whole classes were spent in discussions like this. I think the entire three years was a discussion like this, to be honest.) But it convinces me "cancel culture" is the bastard stepchild of "politically correct." Which was always bogus bullshit invented by the right wing to taunt the left and tie it up in rhetorical knots (admittedly not that hard to do).
In fact, you can't slip a class distinction between the two concepts. More and more I'm sympathetic to Wittgenstien's statement that philosophy is a fly in a bottle, and he was just trying to get it out of the bottle. "Cancel culture" is that kind of discussion. Even talking about it gives it more credence than it deserves.
i rest my case. You’re the richest member of the Senate.— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) July 22, 2020
