By and large due to the very idea of a First Amendment protection of speech, speech in America has always been raucous. The freedom to shame others (the rich, the elite, the venal, the belligerent, the willfully ignorant) is as American as cherry pie.

I think it's a lot of NYT privilege elite opinionators whining that people vigorously object to what they say and do with the influence they wield, telling their critics to shut up in the name of "free speech." The NYT and would-be great rags and mags have a long history of supporting the status quo, including racism, sexism, etc. And then they whine when those they victimize fight back. The NYT can get stuffed.
