So the Dow opens reacting to Trump’s tariffs (which I doubt have taken effect. Does Trump know the mechanisms for that? Does anyone in the White House? As SecTreas been approved yet? Has he found his office?), and Trump almost immediately announces a deal with Mexico. Well, not so much a deal as an agreement to make a deal.🤝 

So, troops to the border. Abbott did that; sent NatG troops to the border. The troops sat around and got so bored they went home or tried suicide. Which was a reasonable response, as they did nothing. But somebody thought it looked tough, and there they are to this day. Withdrawing them would prompt too many embarrassing questions, including: “Does this mean the border crisis is over?”

Mexican troops at their border means jackshit. Mexico was cooperating with Biden. Most of the immigrants at the border are not Mexican. Mexico doesn’t want the burden of refugees, either. But they don’t have an Elmo or Stephen Miller in government. They do have a President who knows how to play an ignoramus as well, if not better, than Putin does.

Nobody will ask if these are drug-sniffing troops who will capture the chemicals used to make fentanyl, or sniff out the drug smugglers. (And when is Trump going to carpet bomb the cartels? Or rather, how long after hell freezes over will he wait?) Will anyone ask what new deal (!) he needs after the one he negotiated last time?

He just wants those headlines to go away.

On May 30, 2019, Trump announced plans to invoke IEEPA to impose emergency tariffs on Mexico beginning June 10. The tariffs would start at 5% and go up every month to a maximum of 25%.

Does this mean Trump learned something; or that Mexico did?

How odd that when Trump announced his “deal” with Mexico he failed to mention that the US committed to halting the flow of assault weapons from the US to Mexico. Why did he leave that out?
