It's the way they took down Hillary Clinton and got us Trump, the way they took down Al Gore and greased the skids for the Brooks Bros. putsch. The media is very good at instilling a barely noticed sense of negativity about Democrats, the NYT has done quite a lot of that, themselves.
ReplyDeleteYou're absolutely right, the French "le" (l + schwa) rhymes with the American English "the"; and since French lacks the English "th" sound, a Frenchman speaking English will typically pronounce "the" as z + the schwa in ordinary English "the." The English long e doesn't enter into it.
ReplyDeleteThis is wholly apart from the weird attitude that French is this hoity-toity language that only pretentious progressive speak.
By the way, just to do a little dad-bragging, my daughter messaged me this morning with a photo of the cover of her second Master's thesis in that hoity-toity language. She has obviously now torpedoed any chance of a political career in the USA (Deo gratias).
