What If I’m The Person Criticizing My Shortcomings?

How do I get away from myself?

And don’t the people around me matter for themselves, and not just what they are to me?

Because you can pick your friends; and you can pick your nose. But you can’t pick your friend’s nose. Because a nose by any other name, would smell the same.

  1. Where to start?
"you are enough". What, you don't need anyone else? Sounds like radical self-sufficiency where no one else matters.
"we should all continually strive to become the best version of ourselves." Ugh. Something I heard from a pastor recently that love, ”the inevitably failed project of continual self improvement.". Her point was we set ourselves up for failure. It's a ridiculous and unattainable goal, and certainly not what God is expecting from us.
"Change the people around you". Yes, we should surround ourselves with people who only tell us how wonderful we are. That doesn't sound the basis for any real relationships. Also, I love the assumption that you will be the one rejecting others and not the one getting rejected. I don't think this sounds so great if it's your friends or family telling you that they are cutting off relations because you don't fulfill some need of theirs. I could go on but it's enough. Sadly I see people regularly posting similar type quotes.
