It reminds me of a self-enclosed comment loop like on an old blog that developed a "community" of regulars who only listen to each other and are not much otherwise in contact with reality. If you can talk their language and can stand to play them, it's easy to get them to believe nonsense. I guess you don't need to be especially bright to own a rig.
