To be clear, removing all statues with "any connection to slavery" is not what @SpeakerPelosi is proposing.— Lindsay Wise (@lindsaywise) June 16, 2020
Her list of 11 statues proposed for removal are all Confederates, plus John C. Calhoun, who died before the Civil War but famously defended slavery as "a positive good" https://t.co/0aaHvp91Cn
Except it doesn't. Besides, removing all references to slavery might be a good thing. How many swastikas do you see in public parks and buildings in Germany? Or statues of Hitler? Or anyone with any connection to the Nazis whatever?
Why, exactly, do we need to remember slavery? Or honor anybody with a connection to it, especially people like John Calhoun?
