Even I have read the journals of the men who traveled with Columbus and recorded first-hand accounts of his barbarism and cruelty and enslavement of the natives.  As the responses prove, Ted Cruz is a credit to the failure of the American system of education to teach history, rather than mythology (and sorry in advance for the duplications; blame Twitter):

Historian here. Columbus enslaved many thousands of Indigenous people & transported between 3,000 & 6,000 of them to Europe. It would have been many more if the Spanish crown hadn’t intervened. His abuses & tyranny were so notorious even in his own lifetime that he was arrested.

Senator, it’s well documented that Columbus did in fact commit genocide. The Arawaks on the island of Haiti were wiped out by him - on purpose. And the diseases you say were an accident? Colonizers purposely gave smallpox blankets to the indigenous people.
