Camp [now Fort] Bragg was named to honor a native North Carolinian, Braxton Bragg. Although Bragg was a career U.S. Army officer, he later fought against U.S. Army troops in the Civil War as commander of Confederate States Army forces, an act of treason against the United States.Yeah, I know it's Wikipedia; but still. The post was renamed to Fort Benning in 1922, after Henry L. Benning, a general in the army of the Confederate States of America.Just so we're clear what the "controversy" is. I know the Trump campaign wants to reach out to blacks. I'm not sure this is a burning issue with them right now, but it's not a bad time to explore renaming these Army installations. Then again, clearly there's no fire Trump won't throw kerosene on. Wonder how that's gonna work out for him?
