I'm guessing growing up in California he didn't see any Mexicans, either. Unless he wandered out to the fields or the orange groves at the right time of year. Or found himself on the "wrong" side of town, by accident. Or intent. Probably grew up thinking "Mexicans" wasn't a racial category, because they were just...you know, Mexicans! More of those darker skinned people God put here to serve white people. You can see that without seeing race, right?
