“Hard” Schools

I actually heard an NPR talking head waiting for Biden to speak on the latest mass shootings say that parents at least expected schools to be “hardened” because they were afraid for their children.

Texas ordered schools to be “hardened “ several years ago. The school in Uvalde was. It was on lockdown when the shooter found an automatic door that failed to lock. And then he was locked in a classroom for an hour.

But not all school buildings have been “hardened,” in Texas or across America. Nor can they be by September. The Senate would do nothing to pass a law (provided the House went along) that simply gave out money to turn school buildings into fortresses. Far more effective would be a weapons ban ( we know this because it was). But by all means, promote an idea that would produce no results for years and provide no solution whatsoever as a false dilemma that plagues the President because the obligation is to “do something.” Even if the “something” is absolutely nothing.

And since I led with that Rupar tweet, I’ll say it again: the lock that did work as designed in Uvalde was the one on the classroom door. The one that kept police away from the shooter, and the children in that room from escaping.
