Invasion!

By and large, the people on the border are comfortable with the border. It’s the people far from the border who fear it. People fear what they do not understand, what they are told to fear.

When Katrina brought people to Houston from New Orleans there were spikes in minor crimes. Bad people came with the good, displaced people settled in, or waited to go back, or reacted badly to their displacement. That was 19 years ago. I was here for it. I missed the influx of Vietnamese “boat people,” but I know some of them. This city is rich with non-white people, as well as Europeans from many nations (oil is an international business; Houston is an international city). We have never been “invaded.” Texas is not being invaded now.

The greatest problem on the border is the numbers, and how to accommodate so many. This is a humanitarian crisis. We must be humane in response to it. That’s what this woman wants. It’s what we should all want.
