...someone on a cell phone telling the other party to go vote. I haven’t heard that kind of conversation in public well...ever. I didn’t think it meant anything.

Sarah, political scientists David Broockman and Josh Kalla had an interesting article last week delving into general election support of Sanders and Biden in hypothetical matchups against Trump. One of their key takeaways was that Biden and other more moderate Democrats picked up votes among Republicans, while Sanders had a group of younger supporters who didn’t plan to turn out if he wasn’t the nominee.

Beating the Dead Horse into Putty



The two most populous states in Super Tuesday had lengthy early voting opportunities:  Texas and California.  The next big issue in campaigning is going to be not ignoring Texas and California until after South Carolina (assuming that date doesn't change):

Going back to the chart Laura just posted (I put it here too) and our conversation about how much Texas might matter, Biden is really hurt by so many Texans having decided and voted well before the last few days. The race is shaping up to be so close — it’s pretty safe to say that had everyone in Texas voted today, Biden would have won.
Here's the chart:

 The two states where voters had already decided were Texas and California.  Biden was campaigning in Dallas last night.  Too late, in one sense; a pretty good idea, in another.  But I cast my vote for Klobuchar a week ago.  Had I done it today, I'd have voted for Biden.  Given the night Biden's having this may not make a difference by the convention, but the usual rules of primaries just don't apply anymore, and candidates are being really slow about taking that into account.

So are the party rules, for that matter.

Yeah, but:

Vote-by-mail balloting began in California on Feb. 3, the same day as the Iowa caucuses, while Texas held an early voting period from Feb. 18 to 28. Somewhere north of 40 percent of Californians may have voted already—and some of them wish they could revote, which is definitely not allowed—while over 1 million people had already voted in Texas’ 10 largest counties. The difficulty for Biden, here, is that during the majority of these days, his campaign had been left for dead, and no one likes voting for a dead loser.

The Lovely Wife and I agree we wish we had waited to vote on Tuesday (but early voting is SOOOOO conveeeenient!).  And it doesn't help that all the pundits with short-term memory loss (what is up with that?  Even Dan Balz goes amnesiac, and he's been doing this as long as me) declare the winner of Iowa (who was that, again?) and New Hampshire the winner of all.  Why, I'm old enough to remember when this was Bernie's race to lose.  And that was right before...South Carolina. Which graveyard Bernie is loudly whistling past tonight.

I would have happily given my vote to Biden to give him more votes than Bernie, but votes will be split tomorrow night all over Texas because of early voting.  Probably the same in California.  Eh, so it goes.  The primary system is still the best system for weeding out the youngest and most inspiring candidates in favor of the oldest and least threatening (Bernie's main threat is to down-ballot races).  Same as it ever was.

Will the Real Americans Please Standup?


Like I said, it's a big country.  And you don't really have to carry the South to get to the White House. But you would have to carry every other state not in the "South" (boundaries subject to argument), and Bernie so far is only getting 25% of some of the Democratic primary vote.  If that number remains steady but the opposition drops to Biden and Bloomberg, Bernie is not getting more of the vote.

And Biden pulled ahead of Bernie on vote count with South Carolina alone.  So "outside the South" may not leave him much to stand on, either arguing he deserves the nomination because of delegate count, or because of raw votes (I've heard him argue it both/and as well as either/or, within recent weeks).

Maybe he should tell us again how he's gonna repeal all state and federal drug laws with an executive order.

(He's keeping his powder dry.) The fish still rots from the head.  Bernie Bros like Bernie for the same reason MAGA Trumpers like Trump.  QED.

Donald Trump from the Other Direction

Yikes. (and no, he can't do that.  Abe Lincoln "freed" the slaves with the emancipation proclamation; FDR locked up Japanese-Americans.  But even those executive orders didn't overturn state and federal laws and declare them null and void by Presidential fiat.  It just doesn't work that way.)

And, you know, Trump kind of recognizes that:



Of course he always has to carry it too far.  You can't stage a coup against someone who's not in charge, but that nuance will be lost on Bernie Bros.  Easier to sell them on the idea that the Democratic establishment (in South Carolina?) is trying to take the nomination away from their saint.    As for Buttigieg dropping out, that should clear the way for Bernie to win, and if it doesn't, well....

OTOH, Trump's effort to get GOP voters to vote for Bernie in South Carolina completely fizzled (called it!), so any impact he has on Bernie Bros just proves they were never really Democrats in the first place.  Or that serious about defeating Trump.  And if they agree with Trump on this well,  who needs them?  Or their candidate, for that matter.

ALL IS WELL!!!!!!


Yeah, that's the problem.

A few choice excerpts from that interview.  First, it seems CDC went with its own test, rather than one used by WHO; and the CDC test was so flawed they had to tell hospitals not to use it.

“I’m here to tell you, right now, in one of the biggest hospitals in the country, I don’t have it at my fingertips,” he said. “I still have to call the Department of Health, I still have to make my case, plead to test people — this is not good!”
...
“In New York state, the person who tested positive was only the 32nd test we’ve done in this state!” he said. “That is a national scandal! They’re testing 10,000 a day in some countries.”

And there was the patient at Lackland AFB in San Antonio who was in quarantine, then released, and is now back in quarantine.  Yeah, this is all going very smoothly.  Oh, and:
