FABER: The administration in power was typically the subject of most of Johnny Carson's jokes, as would seem to be the case right now. This is not the news.

Really not the concern of the FCC.FCC Chair Brendan Carr: "There's a much bigger shakeup that's underway right now. Ever since President Trump won the election, it's created a permission structure for markets -- including the media market -- to rationalize. L’etat, c’est Trump.FABER: I wonder whether you're just targeting comedians who are offending the president

BRENDAN CARR: Broadcast TV is different. If you have broadcast TV license, it comes with an obligation to serve the public interest. pic.twitter.com/LU2W397VUD
Pretty sure they don’t.FCC Chair Brendan Carr says Sinclair has "every right" to demand that Jimmy Kimmel to donate to Turning Point USA pic.twitter.com/SCmDC8ljkL

BRENDAN CARR: If local TV stations don't think running that programming serves the public interest, then they have every right under the law to preempt it. We're in the midst of a massive shift. That road runs both ways, buddy.
Be careful what you wish for, you might get it. (Although Hannity’s network is not subject to FCC regulation “in the public interest.” More likely FoxNews starts streaming as cable withers and dies. But broadcast stations that go more conservative (hem-hem CBS) could find themselves on the receiving end.)Looking forward to when the next democrat president kicks Hannity off the air and forces him to donate to Planned Parenthood. https://t.co/TOVcO5XMAa

This guy pretty much just sticks his finger in the air. Or just notices when the “wrong”ox is getting gored.President Biden is right.

Political satire is one of the oldest and most important forms of free speech.
It challenges those in power while using humor to draw more people in to the discussion.
That’s why people in influential positions have always targeted it for censorship.
I get the feeling these guys don't care if they become villains in history for seventy years into the future. I don't know if Olbermann's prediction made when Colbert was given a years notice is true that all the late night audience talk shows are on the way out but if it were me, I'd want to go out the way that Kimmel is going out because it will make his reputation for at least as long and there's no question that he's on the side of democracy, unlike so many in the original blacklist. Considering how much they've been being paid for years I don't think they're going to have trouble making ends meet and they might make a podcast career that's a lot freer. Lots of those who have been canned by corporate media are a lot better on their own. Olbermann's just one example of that.
ReplyDeleteI never caught the interest of anyone who could denounce me when I was in a pulpit or teaching.
ReplyDeleteNow, in this new era of McCarthyism, I’m still invisible, but also as invulnerable as Olbermann. But being too small to notice is my protection, and I’m very happy with it. I see people being fired for what they said in social media, and I think: “EXECUTE YOUR EXFIL! DELETE YOUR ACCOUNT! BY THE TIME YOU HEAR THE JACKBOOTS, IT’S TOO LATE!”
Not that many expected this to happen; until it did. Still, it’s not like the Hollywood black list: you can save your job by scrubbing your social media presence. It ain’t worth it, and you can’t sue your way back into employment. Which is not to blame victims but, as they say in “Slow Horses:” “London Rules: cover your arse.”
