Happy Birthday to one of the great American voices. Lord, you were on our game on this one.https://t.co/IiflPgTXw6— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) July 15, 2020
I've been indulging my nostalgia sweet tooth recently, as a new Linda Ronstadt album of a recording made in her prime dropped. It was an HBO special, but the tapes disappeared after it aired.
I saw her once in concert. She walked into the arena, the spotlight hit her, and without hesitation she opened, a cappella, with "Lose Again." Her voice was as clear and as pure as a ringing bell. She had us all from the first note, and that note was all her.
I'm a great admirer of vocal music, especially of classically trained singers. But I still remember the thrill of that moment, some 30 years (40? Maybe.) gone now. I'm grateful we have her recordings, at least.
