The advice of a medieval Cistercian monk: better to read what is in one’s heart, than what is written in a book.
I’m looking afresh at the clamor of the Twitter feeds and internet sites I read so obsessively for so long, and simply reconsidering how I’ve spent my time. Not judging or condemning; just reconsidering.
As Kierkegaard put it, he was for self-examination, but exhorted people to judge for themselves. One of the biggest problems we make is judging for others. Sometimes you need to; but mostly, you don’t. It’s just easier than self-examination. You know: reading what’s in your heart. That’s some hard reading, indeed.
