I don’t know about the accuracy of the statistic, but am I surprised that the “average American” doesn’t travel that much? 

No. Travel is expensive. What doesn’t surprise me is the idea the average American can’t afford much of it. 

That said, my city count is 11. Of course, three of these 20 are in Texas, where I’ve lived most of my life, so that’s easy. Gets me above 50% without even trying. And I’ve lived in three of the cities (not all in Texas).
