A Change Of Heart

 On one occasion, a legal expert stood up to put him to the test with a question:  "Teacher, what do I have to do to inherit eternal life?"

He said to him, "How do you read what is written in the Law?"

And he answered:  "You are to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your energy, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus said to him, "You have given the correct answers; do this and you will have life."

But with a view to justifying himself, he said to Jesus, "But who is my neighbor?"

Jesus replied:

There was a man going from Jerusalem down to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers.  They stripped him, beat him up, and went off, leaving him half dead.  Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road; when he caught sight of him, he went out of his way to avoid him.  In the same way, when  Levite came up to the place, he took one look at him and crossed the road to avoid him. But this Samaritan who was traveling that way came to where he was and was moved to pity at the sight of him.  He went up to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring olive oil and wine on them.  He hoisted him onto his own animal, brought him to an inn, and looked after him.  The next day he took out two silver coins, which he gave to the innkeeper, and said, 'Look after him, and on my way back I'll reimburse you for any extra expense you have had.'

'Which of these three, in your opinion, acted like a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?"

He said, "The one who showed him compassion."

There was this rich man, who wore clothing fit for a king and who dined lavishly every day.  This poor man, named Lazarus, languished at his gate, all covered with sores.  He longed to eat what fell from the rich man's table.  Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.  It so happened that the poor man died and was carried by the heavenly messengers to be with Abraham.  The rich man died too, and was buried.

From Hades, where he was being tortured, he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off and Lazarus with him.  He called out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me! Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in torment in these flames.'

But Abraham said, 'My child, remember that you had good fortune in your lifetime, while Lazarus had it bad.  Now he is being comforted here, and you are in torment. And besides all this, a great chasm has been set between us and you, so that even those who want to cross over from her to you cannot, and no one can cross over from that side to this.'

But he said, 'Father, I beg you then, send him to my father's house--after all, I have five brothers--so he can warn them not to end up in this place of torture.'

But Abraham says, "They have Moses and the prophets;, why don't they listen to them?'

'But they won't do that, father Abraham,' he said.  'However, if someone appears to them from the dead, they'll have a change of heart.'

One could argue that Luke's gospel has a central theme, and that theme is hospitality.  Don't worry, I won't make that argument here.  But take it as read, and the rest of this makes more sense.  Las Posadas, the great Advent celebration of the journey of the Holy Family from Nazareth to Bethlehem, celebrates the story of hospitality, though it inverts Luke's meaning.  There was no "Holiday Inn" or "Motel 6" in 1st century Bethlehem.  There isn't even an innkeeper in Luke's story.  But the inhospitality of Caesar (forcing people to travel for the convenience of his census) is part of Luke's tale, just as Herod's massacre of the innocents, hoping to kill the Christchild in the slaughter, is part of Matthew's.  They're both working the same end of the street:  the inhospitality of the world to the Christchild, and the hospitality of family (Mary and Joseph stay with family in Bethlehem, just not in the "guest room" (Katalamati, in Luke's Greek)). and strangers (shepherds; magi) who are, not coincidentally for either gospel, far outside the main power structures of Palestine (the shepherds are outlaws, the magi are foreigners).  So by the time we get to Luke 10, we've had a pretty good introduction to Jesus' ideas about hospitality in Luke's gospel (like Luke 4, where Jesus tells the elders a prophet is without honor in his own country, and pisses them off pretty badly with his implied rebuke of their willingness to accept him.  And what is hospitality except accepting, even welcoming, the stranger?)

The parable of the Good Samaritan is about boundaries and acceptability.  My New Testament professor liked to recast it as a modern day story of an Israeli Jew and a Palestiniant from Gaza.  The Israel is the beaten man, the Palestinian the one who picks him up, treats his wounds, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.  How would the Jew feel, especially now, if this happened after the massacre?  Maybe make the Israeli a member of the IDF, if it helps.

Now, VPOTUS Vance, who is your neighbor?  Who stands in the hierarchy you imagine ordo amoris to be (it isn't), and comes between the Samaritan and the Jew, or the Palestinian and the soldier?

The parable is entirely about boundaries, about who is in, and who is out, and who stands closest to us and is most "deserving" of our attention and care.  And the answer is obvious.  It's so plain even the lawyer (I love putting it that way!) gets it on the first pass.  So obvious he has no further responses, no objection, no argument.  He's a smart lawyer (I like to think); he knows when to sit down.  And you notice Jesus doesn't leave the conversation at that.  Doesn't give the appearance he's thought to himself "Suck on that, punk!  I've run rings 'round you logically."  No, he ends with a simple directive:  "Go; do the same yourself."  And how easy is that?  

Or hard, if you conjure up a comforting hierarchy that absolves you from responsibility and blame and burden because, after all, the man in the ditch is not in your family.  He's not your next-door neighbor, your BFF, your frat brother, your friends from high school you haven't seen in 10 years.  He's not even a Haitian living in Ohio (wonder how many of them ICE has tried to round up?  Or have they not gotten around to it yet?  Somebody should ask VPOTUS Vance about that.)

And what about Abraham and Lazarus?

It's a funny thing, but the name Lazarus appears twice in the gospels.  Like the parable of the Good Samaritan (which is a parable of hospitality, among other things.  Hospitality because welcoming the stranger can also mean caring for the stranger, even in a public place like a roadside ditch.), the parable of Lazarus and Dives (the name comes from the tradition, not from Luke) appears only in Luke.  But the name "Lazarus" shows up in the non-synoptic Gospel of John.  Except there Lazarus is a friend of Jesus, who dies, causing Jesus to weep, and to resurrect him.  No resurrection of Lazarus in Luke; but another story about hospitality.

Now apply VPOTUS Vance's odd ordo amoris to this parable. To Vance that's "a hierarcy of obligations" which means his (Vance's) moral duties are NOT "the same as his duties to a stranger who lives thousands of miles away."  (Again, with emphasis: not what Aquinas said.)  There is no hierarchy of charity (Aquinas' term) that relieves you of obligation to a stranger, whether thousands of miles away, or just outside your gates (do you imagine Vance doesn't live in a gated community when he's not VPOTUS?). Certainly the parable sees an obligation is there.  And one Dives knew about all the time:

But Abraham says, "They have Moses and the prophets;, why don't they listen to them?'

Abraham means they have the law, and the prophets, and both say take care of the poor, then all will be well with you. That your neighbor is anyone you can help. And whether you do it or don’t, is what is decisive. “Lord, when did we see you?” It’s not even nearly a matter of convenient hierarchies.

What's Vance's excuse?  He mis-read Aquinas?

Kern River Watermaster Art Chianello and Kings River Watermaster Steve Haugen both said they had not received notice of flood releases from Isabella and Pine Flat. 
But neither of those lake levels are above their winter allowance, Haugen said.
Guess who? Trump was releasing water farmers need. (But hey, they won’t have anybody to work the fields, so…)

Oh, that’s not all. Congress can stop all of this. Trump has any power over tariffs because Congress gave that power to the Office of the President. Congress can take it back. The only question is, how long will it take them to do that? One year? Or three? By which I mean, with a new Congress? Or before then?
Congress can stop everything Trump is doing or wants to do. How long it takes them to do so is up to we, the people.

The Hollow Men

An investigation like the one Jack Smith did, that led to a grand jury indictment? Or an investigation like Comer did, that led nowhere and ended with his key witness in jail for perjury?

A real investigation? Or a Queen of Hearts investigation? “Sentence first—verdict afterwards!”

And run by people like this?
Or like this? Her boss opened the press conference yesterday saying he had opinions on what happened, and that was good enough, why wait for facts? The whole point of gathering facts is to be sure people don’t suffer and die from preventable causes. But Trump knows facts are stupid things. Far better to blame straw men.

Brendan Carr, Chair of the FCC, wants to investigate NPR and PBS over their use of advertising.
Carr noted in his letter that he was sharing it with lawmakers on Capitol Hill because he thought it could inform their debate over whether to cut off all taxpayer subsidies of NPR and PBS programming.
Sentence first; verdict afterwards. He doesn’t really want to investigate NPR and PBS; he wants an excuse to eliminate them. Why waste time on details like facts?

Trump is doing the same thing with federal funding. All federal funding is presumed guilty of violating the new Administration’s policies (whatever they are), until proven innocent. What those policies are with respect to public health and cancer research (and how such research is antithetical to them) have yet to be explained; but honestly, RFK, Jr. heading HHS is starting to look like a head fake, a distraction from the real problem: the guy in the Oval Office empowering the Idiocracy.

Still, the pattern is clear: sentence first; verdict … well, who really needs a verdict? Trump knows enough already. He has “common sense.” I mean, whaddya want him to do? Go swimming?

As Keith Olbermann said, that depends entirely on whether or not Trump can swim.

Then they will give him a similar reply: 'Lord, when did we notice that you were hungry or thirsty or a foreigner or naked or weak or in prison, and did not attempt to help you?' 
He will then respond: 'I swear to you, whever you didn't do for the most inconcpicuous members of my family, you didn't do for me.' 
The second group will then head for everlasting punishment, but the virtuous for everlasting life.
Stories of hospitality and charity, and to whom same should be extended (answer: everyone and anyone), ending with the final judgment based on those virtues. Stories of what you owe strangers.

So, tell me altar boy who slandered people in your own state because they were NOK and you wanted to be VPOTUS… Tell me: how does your precious ordo amoris rank these stories? Or even explain the parable of the sheep and the goats? Don’t presume to be a theologian because you remember a phrase from Aquinas; presume to speak for Jesus, or think you can tell us the order in which to love.

Because I was pretty sure already, you really don’t know shit.


simplest most direct instance was when Jesus said the most important thing was love God and love your neighbor, and the quibbler asked "Who's my neighbor?" and Jesus told a story about a Samaritan, a heretic who denied the Davidic Kingdom, the Temple, the prophets and the writings. In the context I read it as a direct rebuke to even the question.

And is there a vaccine?💉) "Electromagnetic radiation is commonly referred to as "light", EM, EMR, or electromagnetic waves." Hardly a comprehensive definition, but just to be clear:

The electromagnetic (EM) spectrum is the range of all types of EM radiation. Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes – the visible light that comes from a lamp in your house and the radio waves that come from a radio station are two types of electromagnetic radiation. The other types of EM radiation that make up the electromagnetic spectrum are microwaves, infrared light, ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma-rays.

So, is RFK afraid of visible light?  (It's ultraviolet that produces skin cancer, btw.)  Yes, EM in concentrations or some forms, can be inimical to human life.   But exposure to most of it is a regular part of existence.

Ummm...👆 (just above) It's still Biden's fault, because.... Kash Patel employs the royal “we.”  When it suits us. Er, they. What are his pronouns, again? Or it could have been caused by gremlins. Agree to disagree. (obviously wasn't the fault of a white guy!) Except when it is. And, without further comment: Of course he doesn’t.

Four Pinnochios Later

 WaPo:

Trump claimed that he had changed Obama’s criteria for hiring air traffic controllers with greater diversity — when in fact he left it unchanged. Moreover, he decried the fact that FAA hired controllers with a range of disabilities that he listed at the news conference. But that program was launched during his first term.
And a few juicy detsils:
FAA Provides Aviation Careers to People with Disabilities,” the agency announced on April 11, 2019. The pilot program, the announcement said, would “identify specific opportunities for people with targeted disabilities, empower them and facilitate their entry into a more diverse and inclusive workforce.” 
The link under “targeted disabilities” is now dead, but the Wayback Machine retains links from June 2017 and January 2021 that show the page was unchanged during Trump’s tenure. The list included: 
Hearing (total deafness in both ears) 
Vision (Blind) 
Missing Extremities 
Partial Paralysis 
Complete Paralysis, Epilepsy 
Severe intellectual disability 
Psychiatric disability 
Dwarfism 
The June 2019 webpage for the Aviation Development Program (ADP) — also now removed but still visible on the Wayback Machine — said the program “provides an opportunity for Persons with Targeted Disabilities (PWTD) to gain aviation knowledge and experience as an air traffic control student trainee.” Participants would get up to one year of experience in an Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC), with a possibility of getting a temporary appointment at the FAA Academy. 
In August 2021, the FAA announced that one of the first three ADP candidates graduated from the FAA Academy and became an official air traffic control trainee. “Twelve candidates are in the pipeline for the ADP, pending completion of the clearance process,” the agency said. “Candidates must first pass the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA), followed by the security and medical clearance process.” 
The announcement said the program was conceived when an air traffic manager met a quadriplegic student who had assumed he would never qualify to be a controller because of his condition. The FAA stressed that participants must meet the same qualifications as any other air traffic controller student. 
A White House spokesman declined to comment.
Long, I know; but all worth it for that last sentence. Now the question is: which way does this old pony run?

Context Is All

 Now I know what Kristi Noem was talking about:

Vance, a Catholic who took office last week, was asked Jan. 26 about the bishops’ criticism of the Trump administration’s various new directives on immigration, specifically the government’s rescinding of a policy that previously restricted immigration arrests at “sensitive locations” such as churches. 
“I think that the [U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops] needs to actually look in the mirror a little bit and recognize that when they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants, are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line?” Vance replied. 
Asked if he believed the U.S. bishops are “actively hiding criminals from law enforcement,” Vance argued that the USCCB has “not been a good partner in commonsense immigration enforcement that the American people voted for, and I hope, again, as a devout Catholic, that they’ll do better.”
They should just be telling them “Jesus saves!”, and then turn ‘em over to ICE. Right?

Cardinal Dolan was none too pleased with that:
 “I was really disappointed with what he said on ‘Face the Nation’ the other day. And I don’t mind telling you, somewhat hurt. This was not only harmful, this was inaccurate. You heard what he said: ‘Oh, the bishops, they’re pro-immigrant because of the bottom line, because they’re making money off this.’ That’s just scurrilous. It’s very nasty, and it’s not true,” Dolan said, speaking on his weekly SiriusXM show “Conversations with Cardinal Dolan.” 
Dolan said the Church’s involvement in migration and refugee services is frequently at the behest of secular leaders such as mayors and governors, who he said recognize the Church’s ability to manage resources efficiently and transparently. 
“You want to come look at our audits, which are scrupulously done? You think we make money caring for the immigrants? We’re losing it hand over fist … we’re not in a money-making business,” he continued.
I’m hardly a defender of Cardinal Dolan, but Vance is full of shit:
The USCCB recently defended its long-standing refugee program as a “work of mercy,” pointing out that every person they help to resettle “is vetted and approved for the program by the federal government while outside of the United States” and reiterating that despite the large sums of money involved, the costs of refugee resettlement often exceed the government’s reimbursement. 
In 2023, the latest year for which figures are available, the USCCB spent nearly $131 million on migration and refugee services, with nearly $130 million of that cost being covered by government grants, primarily from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of State.

But it's not really about facts with this Administration.  It's all about (white) fear of a brown planet. 

It’s Always Worse Than You Think

Trump responded, "No, I don't think so at all. I don't think the names of the people, you mean the names of the people that are on the plane? Uh, you think that's going to make a difference?

Collins fired back, "Are you blaming yourself?" 
"Please, please," Trump responded.
Granted, that last question was kinda dumb. Trump is never responsible for anything:

TSA Administrator David Pekoske was fired even though he was originally appointed by Trump during his first term and was in the middle of what was supposed to be Pekoske’s second five-year term in the job after he was reappointed by Biden and confirmed by the Senate.
When DEI is spelled E-L-O-N.

And as you keep turning the kaleidoscope, the picture keeps getting uglier:
Bash showed a live shot of the teams working to recover bodies, when Bash commented, "As this is happening, the president of the United States went into the White House briefing room, and almost immediately began to blame Democrats for the diversity programs that were in place, suggesting, as he admitted, without evidence, that perhaps there is a connection between that and what you are looking at." 
Bash then played a portion of Trump's remarks. 
"I put safety first. Obama, Biden and the Democrats put policy first, and they put politics at a level that nobody's ever seen, because this was the lowest level. Their policy was horrible and their politics was even worse. You have to be talented, naturally talented geniuses. You can't have regular people doing that job. They won't be able to do it. But we'll restore faith in American air travel." 
Trump continued, "I'll have more to say about that. I do want to point out that various articles that appeared prior to my entering office, and here's one, the FAA's diversity push includes focus on hiring people with severe intellectual and psychiatric disabilities. That is amazing." 
Getting rid of Biden-era Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies and returning to "meritocracy" has been a cornerstone of Trump's second term. 
Bash once again went to the live shot. 
"I just want to emphasize what you're looking at is live," Bash said of the recovery effort live shot. This is just a few miles down the road from the White House. The bodies of the 67 people believed to have perished are still being fished out of the Potomac River — the icy Potomac River — when we heard that from the president of the United States and from other senior members of his cabinet, in addition to some words of condolence and and remorse and and prayers for some of them."
At this point I’m just surprised Trump hasn’t gone home to play golf. Not holding my breath on that one. And the irony is: by holding this press conference so he can deny responsibility with irrational conspiracy theories and more shouting about “DEI”:
We are watching in realtime the systematic unraveling of decades aviation safety accident investigative precedent and process from the President of the United States.
Trump just makes it all about him, and makes himself more responsible. 
It's not "politicizing a tragedy" to point out the top levels of the federal government aren't functional—the three key leaders here are drunk rapist TV show host at DoD, reality TV star at DoT, and nobody at FAA—and they're doing squat except spreading the same dysfunction down the ladder.
Small wonder Trump is blaming Biden. And yet:

And then another one blew up…) Trump couldn’t be bothered to examine the cases if the 1600 J6 defendants, so he issued a blanket pardon. But he will examine DEI hires for “mental competence”? Or is it more likely they are “DEI” and therefore presumptively incompetent?
Does anyone remember now why we fired this guy the last time? Sean Duffy doesn’t know what’s going on, or even who tha acting head of FAA is. Pete Hegseth is busy today talking about moving immigrants to Gitmo, despite this accident involving military aircraft. Somebody take the shovel away from Vance. You know there’s still a recovery effort underway, right? That the investigation has barely begun? Or do you just not care? And the POTUS and VPOTUS are contributing to the “ill-informed opining.” It’s disgusting.🤮

The only Christianity is one with a soteriology Kristi Noem approves of. Which is implicitly not the Christianity of Bishop Budde. Or the Episcopal Church, for that matter. Or the Catholic Church, either. (Or any NGO that treats immigrants like people rather than like…invaders.) Or any Christian denomination that doesn’t preach sola salvation because all you need is a “Get Out Of Hell Free” card (and you get that by saying the right words to the right people at the right time. Is it any wonder I am so through (“How through? So through!” (Sorry; very private old joke.)) with classical Christian soteriology?)

And yes, I blame the Supreme Court for this shit. Starting pretty much with Hobby Lobby. 

And I think this is still an Impoundment Control Act problem, because while Congress can establish guidelines for agencies (and I don’t know how much discretion they gave Homeland Security here) to follow in disbursing funds, there is still the First Amendment. (Well, yeah, until the Supremes guts it completely. Which kind of makes my earlier statements about the Court no longer operative so…fuck it, I’m tired of predicting the future. Except, in my defense, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion” is a bit more ambiguous than:
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.
Yeah, never mind. Fuck it.)

Just To Underline What Trump v US Did

He seems nice. To his rich constituents, anyway.
The responsibilities and authority of the White House Counsel and Attorney General are also clear. And they aren’t what the White House Counsel thinks they are.

I’ll say it again: the Roberts Court read presidential immunity into the Constitution, imagining they were protecting the office and they would be praised for their efforts. They overruled Roe because it read a right of privacy into the constitution. 

But it’s a very different matter to read the words of the Constitution out of the law. The first section of the 14th Amendment is clear about birthright citizenship, as found in Wong Kim Ark. The authority of Congress to allocate funds is clear in Art. I of the Constitution, and in the Impoundment Control Act. If the Roberts Court tried to rule the way Trump wants them to on either issue, they would lose all credibility and authority, and probably unwind matters back to before Marbury. I’m quite serious about that. If the Court usurped the plain language of the Constitution that egregiously, they would lose all authority. Sort of like this:
Pretty sure that has to be authorized by Congress.  See, Art. I, U.S. Constitution. I guess he’s decided he can’t buy it (without Congressional support and funding), so he’s going to make it a state. But that requires Greenland petitioning Congress and establishing a constitutional democratic government. Being a part of Denmark, it’s still a monarchy.

He’s already walking that back, too. Pretty soon he’ll just stop talking about it, and drop it down the memory hole. 🕳️

Born Every Minute

If you resign, they haven’t fired you. But neither are they obligated to pay you any severance at all. 

Sen. Kaine:
Trump sows chaos in federal workforce then says “resign within a week and I’ll give you 7 months severance.” Don’t fall for it!  Trump told innumerable contractors he’d pay—then stiffed them. He has no authority to promise severance pay. Wait him out!

Government by scam. If they don’t quit, Trump can’t fire them. Just as he knew he couldn’t use the military on the border; so he used military planes at several times the cost of chartered flights (those military transports gobble up a lot of fuel), just to look tough and say he did use the military.

But what does he lose by trying? It’s not like the con costs him anything.

(Of course, the employees would be waiving their benefits, too. That’s not something done lightly. So some may take the offer, but it won’t be many. Still, Trump will proclaim he removed thousands from the government payroll, even if nobody takes the offer. Go ahead, prove him wrong. Government by scam.)

And why is Trump doing this?
I want to see that argument brought up in court.
