So what’s the solution?" he continued. "Distract, distort, and drown the truth in so much fake content that people can’t distinguish fantasy from reality. If he can’t make America great again, he’ll at least make it confused enough not to notice how bad things are."Is Trump confusing America? Or himself? It’s Trump who insists inflation is non/existent; that America loves him; that the economy is the greatest it’s ever been. Who believes that, except him? He even says: “Our big year won’t be really next year—it’ll be the year after."
"But when the president of the United States shares fabricated videos of political rivals confessing to crimes, or doctored images of government policy proposals that don’t exist, that isn’t fun. That’s weaponized disinformation," Cohen added. "We’re not just watching Trump clown around with AI. We’re watching the erosion of truth as a shared foundation of American life. The same man who shouted “fake news” into existence now relies on actual fake news to prop himself up."
Who’s zoomin’ who?
As I write, I’m watching the movie of one of myb(still) favorite Bradbury stories, “Something Wicked This Way Comes.” The Cooger and Dark Pandemonium and Shadow Show is not defeated by being more grim and determined than they are. It is defeated by childhood laughter, and innocence that asks for no reward except its own.
Laughter and children won’t defeat Trump, but they will break the spell that Trump has secret powers. He isn’t throwing Molotov cocktails with his videos. He’s stroking his pathetic ego. Maybe MAGA pays attention to those, but the rest of the country? The part that isn’t terminally online? Have they even heard of them?
Cooger and Dark prevail because the townspeople think the carnival people have power. Will Holloway’s father is tormented by the Dust Witch until he starts laughing at her. She quails, she cringes, she retreats. Finally he defeats her by carving a smile on a wax bullet for a magic trick. All that matters is the symbolism. Trump tries to symbolize power. But the response to false power is laughter. He can’t scare you if you can’t be scared.
Fight him in the courts, where he can’t win. Laugh at him on social media, where he thinks he’s winning.
