In Trump's new video, he vows U.S. will stand with Iranians as they try to wrest control of government.
Minutes later, White House releases statement (below) signaling goal is threat reduction.
Earlier, Trump told the Atlantic he'd be open to talks w/ regime. pic.twitter.com/7OZu98mJ9k
1. We invaded not because the threat was imminent, but because it was not. Iran was weak.

1. We invaded not because the threat was imminent, but because it was not. Iran was weak. The scary part is, I don’t think Trump understands that.
2. The negotiations were a pretext.
3. There was no day after plan. This is, after all, the "let's-see-what-happens" presidency.
4. Hoping the Iranian people will rise up is not a strategy.
5. This is a giant step toward getting more embroiled in the Middle East, exactly what he promised not to do.
Are we reassured yet? About the price of eggs, I mean.Trump seems to be testing out different arguments for the war on Iran with different reporters but does not seem to have settled on anything he is comfortable defending in a serious way

Pres Trump told me tonight the US had identified possible candidates to take over Iran, but they were killed in the initial attack.Everything he knows about regime change, he learned from Venezuela.
"The attack was so successful it knocked out most of the candidates," Trump told me. "It's not going to be anybody that we were thinking of because they are all dead. Second or third place is dead."
See?New New York Times Interview with President Trump:

Trump: “What we did in Venezuela, I think, is the perfect scenario”
When pressed on his plans for a transition of power, Mr. Trump said he hoped Iran’s military forces would simply turn over their weapons to the people.
"Deal” is the only concept he knows, and he doesn’t understand that correctly. No more than he understands government. So he was attempting deals, as in Venezuela, to have have a smooth transition to someone from the same regime. Are all the Iranians singing his praises aware of this?

Not the flex he thinks it is. Especially when he excludes “the brains.”Lindsey Graham: Donald Trump has the balls and the vision to do things no one else would do. pic.twitter.com/vUfz1mvvMf

They really don’t understand how this is done, do they? Because, beyond “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb bomb Iran,” it’s perfectly clear that there is no plan.Luna: We will not vote on having war with Iran because according to the plan, which I won’t say too much about on television, everything is going according to plan. pic.twitter.com/1oaMdEkmC4

Trump is so weak and incoherent he hasn't addressed the nation live, despite putting our forces into harm's way.

Hadn't seen Trey Gowdy for a while. He looks... unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteSo much for the lighter side. The whole rest of the thing might be summed up by Jeffrey Epstein's take on Trump: "no moral compass". Or maybe Fran Leibowitz: "you don't know anybody as stupid as Donald Trump". Or myself: "Trump is the most convincing argument against democracy".
Watching him lumber past the reporters into the fool's gold-plated White House, the line from "Gatsby" comes to mind: like Tom and Daisy, he's smashed things up and now is retreating into the money that's protected him from consequences his whole life. Except now he also has the power of large parts of the federal government to cover for him like old Fred and Roy Cohn (Trump might be his revenge on America for rejecting Joe McCarthy) used to.
At least we seem to have skipped the initial "rah-rah" for the latest Middle Eastern adventure and fast forwarded to the point the American people are saying "wait, what the hell is going on".
