The @NYTimes report suggests multiple top Trump Admin officials knew the facts and deliberately misled Congress and the American people.— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) January 27, 2020
A massive White House cover-up.
All we need is four Republican Senators to get the truth.https://t.co/JbazBaYdRU
Note the date, folks. The White House has had this for WEEKS before the Senate trial. Consider everything the Trump legal team said last week with that in mind.... https://t.co/AH5usbkOnJ— Susan Glasser (@sbg1) January 27, 2020
The revelations directly contradict Trump's claim that he never tied the hold-up of Ukrainian aid to his demands for investigations into his political opponent Joe Biden. https://t.co/7FCQknNtLy— Axios (@axios) January 27, 2020
At least some members of Trump's legal team also likely knew of Bolton's knowledge which, if so, potentially subjects them to criminal perjury charges or legal disciplinary actions for their statements before the Senate. https://t.co/Ur4ST3vmSS— Mark S. Zaid (@MarkSZaidEsq) January 27, 2020
NYT bombshell could significantly change the calculus on witnesses in the trial. One senior GOP official says: "The odds of deposition for new witnesses is certainly rising dramatically." https://t.co/GXFuPoESEc— Seung Min Kim (@seungminkim) January 27, 2020
The first paragraph of the NYT story on Bolton contains several key details:— Marshall Cohen (@MarshallCohen) January 27, 2020
"Trump told" = Trump said it himself
"In August" = weeks after Zelensky call
"$391 million" = all the aid (DoD + State)
"helped with investigations = quid pro quo
"the Bidens" = explicit, not 'Burisma' pic.twitter.com/2AzIBAEGrc
McConnell told Fox weeks ago he was synced up 24/7 w/WH counsel’s office on DT’s acquittal- WH counsel typically reviews manuscripts. When Mitch marched his caucus over the public opinion cliff on witnesses + docs he likely knew Bolton would obliterate DT’s impeachment defense. https://t.co/HzUR0XwAYl— Nicolle Wallace (@NicolleDWallace) January 27, 2020
Yeah , we still have to wait for what tomorrow brings. What you think should happen is seldom what really happens. This latest news of course focuses attention back on the fact that Trumps defense lawyers were actually active participants in the conspiracy. Usually yr defense lawyer wasn’t actually a participant in the crime. Except for mob lawyers.— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) January 27, 2020
And a reminder: there are no heroes here, and truth does not come forth to set all things right. If Bolton wanted, he could give an interview to any news outlet tomorrow. He could put it all out there and shift the equation to make Republican Senators desperate to call him in for cross examination. He could have done it a month ago. But there's no money in that, is there?— Walter Shaub (@waltshaub) January 27, 2020
I'd love to be wrong about it but if what they've learned so far hasn't made four "moderates" demand witnesses and more evidence, not to mention common sense and basic interest in acting on the basis of the truth, I doubt this is going go install a sense of morality and a backbone into them.
ReplyDeleteQuite the opposite. Now they're all worried how to keep up appearances. They dare not remove Trump from office. They can only hope voters forget by November, and disconnect their Senator from the attack ads that will pummel Trump.
