" '...I want the plan for my 86-year-old mother to be more than theoretical,' he said."
My daughter is getting married this weekend. Her primary concern has been for her parents, both in their sixties. Her uncle won't attend (my brother, also in his sixties) because of health concerns. She'd rather he not attend, than attend and be exposed over the weekend. She is also young, but has health problems which make her vulnerable to the disease.
“The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, while better protecting those who are at highest risk,” the declaration reads. “We call this Focused Protection.”
This kind of blanket "some are vulnerable/some are not" thinking is sheer nonsense. And how do we decide which trade to make: mental health (as argued by the proponents of "herd immunity") v. physical health. Which, in the end, is more important? We cannot make the either/or choice of health or disease; we clearly have to decide which problem we'd rather treat. And how do we get the virus to cooperate with our decisions, especially when one size NEVER fits all?
And what's remarkable is that in the entire article, not one proponent for "let the kids get sick/protect the elderly" mentions that's exactly what Sweden did.
[Swedish Ambassador to the U.K. Torbjörn] Sohlström also said that despite its novel approach, Stockholm had not done well to protect its weak and elderly. "We were not successful enough in protecting our weak. We got COVID into quite a lot of care homes ... we have a commission of inquiry in Sweden already looking at why this happened and what we can learn and what we should have done differently."
The country now counts close to 6,000 deaths from COVID-19 so far, just under 95,000 total infections and 5,173 new infections over the last two weeks, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. It ranks fourth in the EU in terms of total infections per million citizens.
Oh, maybe that's why.
But I'm sure "Focused Protection" would work out great!

Was this man "vulnerable," or not? Is his death worthwhile for the concept of "Focused Protection"? Please address her directly. Thanks.Amanda Kloots’ husband died of Covid at age 41.

Congratulations on the wedding, best wishes and blessings for your daughter and her love.
ReplyDeleteMy nephew was married a few weeks ago, most of the guests joined by zoom to avoid traveling and the risks of exposure. Even the sister of the bride couldn't attend, she delivered her toast virtually. The world has changed, but maybe not all for the worse. Even pre-Covid not everyone could attend if too far or not physically able. Maybe the future will allow us to gather in new ways.
