But Did The 19th Century Press

...call it “court packing” for 20 years and keep asking the Democratic candidate if they would further “pack the court”?

  1. I never looked at that frieze before, there's a soldier holding a fasces. I figured it must have meant something different to the designers of the building, which I hadn't realized is so much more recent and has so much dodgier a history and provenance and symbolism than my brief read of that this morning shows. But I was wrong, they fully understood its implications in 20th century history because as they were building it they were in communication with the Mussolini government to get marble to make the goddamned thing.

    The Court building, apparently, was meant to be a temple of the law, symbolizing in its chief mover's vision, the "royalty of justice." Talk about the stunning relevance of The Prophetic Imagination to the news of the day.
