Law For Thee, But Not For Me!

emptywheel argues that these are examples of Trump trashing the legal system and nefariously winning a battle no one knows he’s fighting.

But to me, it’s just people who don’t understand the legal system throwing tantrums about their ignorance. Trump is not a threat to the legal system any more than a kid at school who won’t do his homework is a threat to the educational system.

Trump’s argument is much simpler and plainer than that:
A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES MUST HAVE FULL IMMUNITY, WITHOUT WHICH IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM/HER TO PROPERLY FUNCTION," the former president wrote. "ANY MISTAKE, EVEN IF WELL INTENDED, WOULD BE MET WITH ALMOST CERTAIN INDICTMENT BY THE OPPOSING PARTY AT TERM END. EVEN EVENTS THAT 'CROSS THE LINE' MUST FALL UNDER TOTAL IMMUNITY, OR IT WILL BE YEARS OF TRAUMA TRYING TO DETERMINE GOOD FROM BAD. THERE MUST BE CERTAINTY."
"EXAMPLE: YOU CAN’T STOP POLICE FROM DOING THE JOB OF STRONG & EFFECTIVE CRIME PREVENTION BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GUARD AGAINST THE OCCASIONAL 'ROGUE COP' OR 'BAD APPLE," wrote Trump. "SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO LIVE WITH 'GREAT BUT SLIGHTLY IMPERFECT.' ALL PRESIDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETE & TOTAL PRESIDENTIAL IMMUNITY, OR THE AUTHORITY & DECISIVENESS OF A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WILL BE STRIPPED & GONE FOREVER. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE AN EASY DECISION. GOD BLESS THE SUPREME COURT!"
Tl;dr: “Law for thee, but not for me!”

Notice he’s addressing the Supremes there. That’s not strategy, it’s stupidity. It’s the straightest line to getting the Justices to deny cert., or just rule against him. Trump is not super-genius, nor a super-villain threatening the foundations of society. He’s a toddler with a shotgun; and he’s all outta shells.

Alina Habba is hardly taking a sledgehammer to the civil court system. Trump lost the NY fraud case. He’s lost to E. Jean Carroll twice. He’s likely to lose the D.C. case, the Georgia case, and when it finally gets to trial, the Florida case. So much winning! And so far he has the electoral support of 51% of 14% of the voters in a red, rural state of 3.2 million (the city I’m typing from is bigger than that). So much more winning!!

Yeah, I don’t see the threat.

(Speaking of the Carroll case:
Alina Habba spent two-days awkwardly trying to establish Carroll’s losses/damage to reputation happened before Trump ever mentioned her.

Game over, man. Game over.
