I don't think Donald Trump has ever for a moment seriously worried about going to jail. The reason he wanted so badly to return to the Presidency is he had figured out there was a lot of money to be had and in any second term- whether it started in 2021 or 2025- there would be nobody to tell him no. He made sure of that. If the guy had a lick of self control we'd be in even more trouble than we are.
