She said she knew these signs, largely as a matter of survival (knowing what NOT to do), but really, I think it was just adolescent paranoia (ah yes, I remember it well). Almost everything short of your hands in your pockets was fraught with dangerous misrepresentation. “Signs” don’t signify so much as they make the “knowledgeable” seem “significant.”
Which is the reason to know hand signs; to prove you are in the know. And what better way to be superior to someone else, than to judge them on the “signs” you get to decide are significant?
