I'm not sure we were every any better at this, but we're considerably worse at it now. Maybe the brief, shining moment in the '60's when we actually seemed rational (counter-point: "The Best and The Brightest") was just an aberration in our national history. More and more, I think it was.Also we’re really bad at holding complex conflicting ideas at once like (1) it could be but (2) still very probably not and (3) media rejected for ideological reasons and (4) people pushed for ideological reasons and (5) people still pro and con for ideological reasons.
