“Cain’t These People Speak Ain-glish?”

I mean... I don’t speak Spanish and even I can figure out “mi esposo” is a cognate for “my spouse.” And I can easily figure out she’s thanking her husband for accompanying her.

I was thinking today about how much of the decay in social order in Central and South America was due to American policy opposing governments that weren’t authoritarian enough. And, of course, illicit drugs. But, generally, treating our neighbors as if they were ours to exploit and control. And when that didn’t work, we walked away. Now the consequences roll up to our borders, and we don’t recognize them. The consequences, I mean. Part of Trump’s appeal lies in that.

The other part lies in ignorance.
