Boomers Cannot Be Trusted, Amirite?

Another day, another Trump policy to make voting harder.

His new target? Nursing homes.

Dr. Oz issued a memo that seems designed to intimidate nursing home staff from helping residents vote.

It’s all about the paranoia:

The guidance, released in July, removes previous recommendations on how nursing home staff can assist residents in exercising their constitutional rights and warns facility employees against violating “federal or state voting laws.” The guidance points to a highly dubious Texas case in which a social worker was charged with orchestrating an election fraud scheme, even though no improper votes were cast.

The case involved a social worker at a state supported living center who:

...submitted voter registration applications for 67 residents without their signature or effective consent, while purporting to act as their agent. Under Texas law, only a parent, spouse or child who is a qualified voter of the county may act as an agent in registering a person to vote, after being appointed to do so by that person. None of the SSLC patients gave effective consent to be registered, and a number of them have been declared totally mentally incapacitated by a court, thereby making them ineligible to vote in Texas.

Maybe a vote fraud scheme; maybe a well meaning person who should have known better.  Hardly the basis for a nationwide alert about Boomers voting from nursing homes, and a fear of voter registration. Although:

Working-class voters, a group that has historically broken strongly for Trump and Republican candidates, are especially angry over gas prices, according to Enten. Among Americans earning less than $50,000 a year, disapproval reaches roughly 86 percent overall, and broken down further, about two in three working-class Republicans disapprove, along with 90 percent of working-class independents and 93 percent of working-class Democrats.

I mean, what is that we're talking about more than six in seven – I don't even know when we get the fractions that high – my goodness gracious," Enten said. "I mean, you just don't ever see numbers like these. These are just atrocious numbers among the working class. A trifecta indeed, and a very clear trifecta of the working class turning against President Trump, regardless of party identification."

The old adage is, just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.
