Different Strokes...

...for different folks.

Lights?  Not until at least (or near enough for dammit!) Gaudete Sunday.  Depending on the weather, which is currently vacillating between '70's and 50's (the lower number considered "cool" if not "cold" here on the Third Coast).

Then again, they'll be up until at least 1/6, so 5+ weeks is too damned long.

Food for the weather/season?  I'd go for tamales or at least cheese enchiladas.  The latter are easier to make at home, so that's what I'd do (tamales are a major family production, and I have neither the support staff nor the equipment for it.  So I don't do those at home.).  Something about winter (for Texas on the Gulf Coast) weather makes me want Tex-Mex at every meal.  Chili is another good home option.  Never eat chili in a restaurant; it always sux. But a plate of cheese enchiladas in meat sauce with rice and beans and a basket of chips with at least two salsas, and a cold beer?  Yeah, I'll down out on that every night of December.  At least.

...about the modern press and white privilege. 

Let’s imagine Obama dining with Louis Farrakhan, and the hue and cry the press would happily raise/report. Because, you know, black peoples crazy! And scary!

Nick Fuentes and white supremacists? I guess the most upsetting thing is that he’s an anti-Semite. I see more emphasis on that than on his animus for non-whites.

We just accept white supremacists more than we do blacks who advocate for blacks. I’m not a hidden Farrakhan fan, but black men angrier than Obama are still way scarier to white people than angry racist white men.
Still trying to understand the difference between someone who “acts” like a racist, and someone who is a racist. I mean, if actions and words don’t do it, what does? And is a racist actually a whole and fulfilled person at the core? I really wasn’t expecting this kind of affirmation of my thesis.

Not technically a quote, since that’s not what Patrick Henry said. But also, Trump has freedom. He’s not going to lose it in the DA’s prosecution. That’s against Trump’s company, and his employee going back to when Trump’s father ran the business is the one likely to lose his freedom.

No concern for Mr. Weisselberg, though. Loyalty runs one way for you, huh?

The words Trump lawyer Alina Habba uttered at the start of the day could be repeated by Trump’s legal team in every courtroom from here on out. 
“My client shouldn’t be in this position. We shouldn’t be in this court—and yet we are.”
Maybe your opening in a jury trial. Never before a judge in a hearing. It means you don’t have a legal argument.

I’m A Believer

I would have been very skeptical of this before Elmo bought Twitter. Of course I didn’t realize how toxic Trump was before he won the White House. So now, I’m a believer.

It’s almost surprising how much more and more Elmo reminds me of Trump. And just as the Presidency wrecked Trump’s narrative of his superpowers, Elmo’s reputation is going to be wrecked by Twitter.

Just too bad he’s going to wreck Twitter to do it.
I’m also convinced now this is a true story. Or might as well be.  I’m also sure we don’t need to qualify this with “now.” Maybe it’s apparent now; but that’s all. Again: what is the opposite of “woke” if not “racism needs to be returned to its rightful place as the center of the status quo”?

Explaining Things To Non-Lawyers

Jack Smith may still be physically at The Hague.

He didn’t write this letter. (And it’s short because it has to be. Think of it as a tweet: you can’t go over the limit.)

Smith’s name is on this because he has appeared in court (again, via paper, not physically) as lead counsel for the government. His name here could be no more than that: a formality. I’m sure the lawyers working this case didn’t wait for Smith’s imprimatur before filing this letter (just as I am sure he knows about it).

And court calendars don’t necessarily recognize holidays. Filings have to be filed in a timely manner, and “But judge, we were eating turkey!” is not a good reason to be late.

It’s an interesting (and very professional) rebuttal that proves what was said in court (IIRC), that Trump needs competent appellate counsel (and he doesn’t have it). But that’s all it is.

JMM and everybody in replies at the original tweet fanboying over this is, frankly, silly. It doesn’t mean nearly what they think it does; and what it does mean they miss entirely.
