The answer is always the same.“Section 51, part 6 of the Tennessee law makes lesson plans illegal if students "feel discomfort, guilt, or anguish."

If only this was the law when I was in high school, I could’ve had the whole math department shut down.

Whose anguish indeed? Black, Hispanic, native, and kids of Chinese ancestry should sue under this law rightfully claiming that teaching a whitewashed version of history that overlooks the injustice done to their ancestors causes them anguish. They should sue over and over and over.
ReplyDeleteLesson plans? Like you can actually predict how students(or parents or for that matter legislators) will respond to the first thing that comes out of your mouth?
ReplyDeleteThere's all the difference in the world between feeling "discomfort, guilt, or anguish" due to being the target of bigotry and racism and being the bigoted racist who gets called on it. There's no even field of play here.
ReplyDeleteThere's a remedy from feeling shame over your own behavior or that of your ancestors, the redemption of stopping that behavior and attempting restitution. I believe in the power of redemption.
