Their national gratitude to the Allies who landed on their beaches in June, 1944, ennobles the nations involved. We Americans are better people for it. We should all be humbled by their grace, and grateful for their gratitude. It is truly a remarkable response that reminds a resolutely ahistorical people like us, just how important history is.
Mostly, though, we should realize how much better we Americans are, because of the graciousness of the French.
