I remember hearing about elephantiasis, probably in late elementary school. The picture of a victim kept me up for nights. Boys like that kind of gross out stuff.

I didn’t hear about nymphomania and satyriasis and cunnilingus and auto-erotic asphyxiation until much later. (Only two of those are now considered real things.) I know someone whose kid was diagnosed ADD. He told me Davy Crockett, who walked from Kentucky to the Rockies and back, just to look at them, was probably ADD. But, he said, Crockett wasn’t expected to sit at a desk all day.

We often diagnose people as having problems when they don’t conform to society’s expectations, as if those expectations were permanent and immutable, and the only basis for assessing people. And they aren’t.

Kennedy is an ignoramus who thinks a world outside his knowledge or ken is a fiction. He’s just really, really stupid.

And you can’t fix stupid.
