"Well, I have a kind of cynical view about this whole issue," Dent said. "I tend to think that Donald Trump would like nothing more than to talk about this issue ad nauseam, about whether or not a person who entered the United States unlawfully should be returned from his native country."Accepting this arguendo, Trump’s approval ratings are still in the toilet and about to be flushed, so what is this deflection getting him? People in Jupiter, Florida and rural Iowa and even MTG’s district are still complaining about the treatment of Abego Garcia, and they’re not real thrilled with the state of the economy, either. Trump may well think what’s in the headlines is all that matters, but that’s not 12th dimensional chess, that’s just fucking pathetic. That’s the ostrich hiding from harm by sticking its head in the ground.
"Setting aside all the facts in the court orders, I think he's doing it because he'd rather be talking about this than the stock market tumbling, the bond market being volatile," Dent said. "Farmers can't find export markets for their their product, consumers are worried about the price of everything from cars to to sneakers, so I think this is a great deflection from the issues that are really driving a lot of people in this country crazy right now."
The president's approval rating sunk to 44 percent in a new UMass poll, compared to 51 percent who disapprove – including 44 percent who "strongly disapprove" of his tenure so far – although he still enjoys a 50 percent-46 percent advantage on his handling of immigration issues.
What’s tiresome is these continued attempts to make Trump look strategic when he’s just flailing like a drowning swimmer; when he’s acting, not even vaguely rationally, but like a man put in a round room and told to go pee in the corner. And he’s trying desperately to do it.
Trump is not strategic. Trump is not cleverly feral. Trump is in so deep that even if he looked up he couldn’t see bottom. He’s not fooling anybody, except maybe himself.
And yes, that framing, “whether or not a person who entered the United States unlawfully should be returned from his native country,” is what Trump and Scott Jennings and Stephen Miller want to talk about. But the country is talking about justice and fairness and due process and the humanity of Abego Garcia.
Which is when they aren’t talking about the crashing economy, three months into Trump’s second (and last; sorry, Steve Bannon) term. That’s not what Trump wants to talk about; but he’s not in control of the narrative. And the narrative is not in the headlines.“God hasn't forgotten about you. … As we continue through Holy Week, my heart arches for my husband, who should have been here leading our Easter prayers. …I hope that the strength of faith…will keep us standing.” https://t.co/eeUw4Kil9x

Right now, the narrative is in the town halls and the streets and the AOC/Sanders rallies. Despite Trump and the pundits wanting the narrative to be the headlines, which are so much easier to pontificate about.
