Your regular reminder that journalism requires no training or regulation, and really is about whatever the Kewl Kids are saying in the lunchroom. Is there a rule somewhere that says journalists shouldn't mention something VERY OBVIOUS AND PERTINENT, such as that Mike Pence wrote about this stuff in his book (with nary a squeak at the time from Trump, I might add)? https://t.co/7C78Vv0w8v

Not really that uncharted. We have a long history of politicians being indicted, or convicted, and still (when eligible) getting elected (eligible meaning “not currently in jail”). The uncharted part is an indicted or convicted President-elect. The only bar to holding the office of POTUS is age, prior impeachment that included a prohibition against holding federal office, or having already served two terms. So a President-elect could avoid imprisonment for four years (arguably, anyway). Which, actually, would be a strong argument against his election.NYT personality giving NewsMax the boost so they both can boost the brand that they both rely on.

If you say otherwise, you'll hurt Maggie's brand. pic.twitter.com/nyxulGpk3n
If this is true:Reminder that when you pass on Trump's attacks on democracy w/o any mediation, you're serving as his propaganda mule. pic.twitter.com/7TXePmjIGa

What’s the point of reporting on this speech at all? Except to say what Rupar says: one hour in and nothing newsworthy. That said, you could report this pretty much as stated:We are an hour into Trump's CPAC speech and it has been all grievances about his legal problems, potshots at Biden, and alternative history about how awesome his term was. There has barely been a hint of an actual 2024 campaign agenda.

Like the “Freedom Cities” with the flying cars, this is so dumb it shouldn’t be filtered.Trump: I will urge congress to create a restitution fund for those unjustly discriminated against by these Biden policies. We will ban all racial discrimination by the government. pic.twitter.com/de2w1FOdiy

It’s a fair cop.I mean, you COULD talk about low turnout for CPAC and report on whether that's about Matt Schlapp being a crotch pummeler or maybe people realize MAGAts are losers?
— emptywheel (@emptywheel) March 4, 2023
Or just parrot Trump. You decide, I guess.
To not do so would be uncharted territory indeed. It's like a crack party for so-called journalists tonight.

TRUMP IS BACK!!!
WE WILL REPEAT WHATEVER HE SAYS BECAUSE WE NEED A FIX!!!!
A) can we just get transcriptions of this crap? B) I guess Trump isn’t worried about the women’s vote? (Pretty clear he thinks he knows what women really are, and it’s all a matter of negotiating price.)Trump: "We will support baby bonuses, for a new baby boom! Oh, you men out there are so lucky. You are so lucky, men." pic.twitter.com/kNWIjBoTcI

The awesome power of CPAC compels you to cover it!Just a mighty, mighty organization. pic.twitter.com/UEQUkplF6X

If you’re gonna complain about the problem, you really should provide a solution.See? You can report on Trump's speech without becoming a propaganda mule for him.
