Governments Have A Duty To Do So Anyway

Hitler is still the avatar of human evil. Yet when he died and Germany surrendered, Nazis were not wiped off the face of the planet. Some faced judgment at Nuremberg, some came here for our rocket program (von Braun, and others). Some returned to civilian life. And in Germany and Japan, the US and the allies rebuilt their countries, rather than treat them as "pure evil" with whom no reasoning or negotiation was possible.

1 million people in the streets of Israel do not concievably speak with one voice, but they do expect their government to save the hostages and negotiate a cease-fire and release.  The failure to do so led to the deaths of six hostages.  Hamas is responsible for that, but the government of Israel had one realistic method of freeing them, and they refused it.  Perhaps Hamas would have killed the hostages anyway, but IDF forces were coming to the rescue, so Hamas did what could be expected:  shot them and left.

Yes, this is on Hamas.  It is also on the government of Israel.  As Shakespeare said in "Romeo and Juliet":  "All are punished."
