In an op-ed for The New York Times this Thursday, David French argues that the American white working class, captivated by Donald Trump, "is indulging its worst aspects."Didn’t we bury the canard that Trump’s base is white, working class males? I mean, seriously, the people Trump appeals to are more likely to socialize with David French than to fix his car or repair his plumbing.
The idea that only working class white guys are driven by the rage and racism Trump spews is, frankly, disgusting. That French indulges in it on the pages of the NYT does not do them credit, either.
And speaking of indulging worst aspects:
Lucky for the United States, Trump has just said that under the Take Care Clause, the President (that is, Biden) can totally override matters reserved to Article I. So Biden can just fire Speaker Trump.I mean, his legal argument really is that bad. But so is this:
I just want to watch House Republicans try to repeal the Rule that people under felony indictments can’t become Speaker for Trump. Great optics, headline writers salivating …And while I can’t find it, I read today about the motion for continuance in Florida. Much of the argument centers around classified documents and the availability of a SCIF in the federal district of the Court. But the article mentioned that two documents in the case are so sensitive, they can only be viewed in Washington, D.C. Which makes the desire for a continuance until after the election a bit more understandable. One assumes those documents are part of the discovery because they were found in MAL.
And that casts an entirely new light on what Trump took with him; aside from what he was telling people at his “homestead.”
Cohen: Out of the triad, the submarine is the one that is most secure for us because it's not targetable. So they're special. And he is giving away special information on what is protecting us around the world.Yeah, there’s a winning campaign moment to remember.
And it could be the documents do have to do with what Trump was babbling about:
The information supposedly included the exact number of nuclear warheads U.S. nuclear subs routinely carry, and exactly how close they can get to a Russian submarine without being detected.
Pratt then later repeated details of the conversation to at least 45 others in emails and phone calls, including six journalists, 11 of his company's employees, ten Australian officials, and three former Australian prime ministers.
The potential disclosure was reported to special counsel Jack Smith's team as they investigated Trump's handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago.
It's unknown if the information Trump gave Pratt is accurate or just Trump grandstanding, but taken together with Trump's lies about stealing classified documents, and Trump's history of being extremely cavalier with sensitive information, it is likely Pratt's story is accurate. It may be those documents that cannot leave D.C. substantiate what witnesses will say what Trump told them. Although proving that in court without revealing the secrets seems a bit tricky to me. I guess that’s what CIPA is for.
And I do wonder what this news will do to this:
Steube: And wouldn't it just be sweet to all these Democrats who kicked out our former speaker that they got rid of Kevin McCarthy, and now they have to deal with President Trump.Yeah, go with the guy who proves “Loose lips sink ships.” Because that’s a winning look; especially when he says he’ll be temporary, which means you have to do this again in about three months. Or maybe two. Or, it’s Trump. He’ll shut down government the first week, and go home.
But making the Democrats “deal” with Trump because they didn’t vote for McCarthy is a great reason to put in another Speaker pro tem.
If they were to decide that, there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected Republicans could be counted on to defend the Constitution." - @Liz_CheneyI thought that was pretty clear already. But anyway…
Geniuses, I tell you. Geniuses. Just like their fearless leader:
Donald Trump just voluntarily dismissed the Southern District of Miami $500 million dollar lawsuit against me. More to come on this!"Me" there is Michael Cohen. Lisa Rubin’s analysis makes as much sense as any:
After two delays, Trump was scheduled to testify Monday in his $500 million case against Michael Cohen. But with 4 pending indictments and an ongoing trial that could cost him hundreds of millions & control of his real estate portfolio, he can’t afford another video deposition.Although I don’t think he can afford the legal fees. And that ongoing trial has already cost him millions of dollars (barring a reversal on appeal, but I think just the summary order has poisoned that well). He can count, at least. That money is frozen, as of today.
And apparently he has decided he doesn’t want the job after all:
"Just had a great conversation with President Trump about the Speaker's race. He is endorsing Jim Jordan, and I believe Congress should listen to the leader of our party," Nehls said on Thursday. "I fully support Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House."Trump liked the attention it brought him. “Dence, monkeys! Dance!” Now he’s through playing with that toy.
So, several rounds of voting in the future, and no owning the Democrats. Or blaming them, either.
