Huh:
Now that North Carolina Republicans have locked down both the legislature and the judiciary, it doesn’t really matter whether Democrats win statewide offices like governor ... The situation highlights just how tenuous a hold citizens have on democracy."From the day I was born, until practically the end of the century, Democrats in Texas controlled every office from Governor to dog-catcher. And it had been that way since Reconstruction.
Did that situation highlight just how tenuous a hold citizens had on democracy? Granted there was a lot of suppression of the votes of in-white people. I’m not saying it was a Jeffersonian paradise.
But we’ve seen this movie before. It’s called “American History.” Is this really America’s end-times? Or just same as it ever was?
One is an argument for the “right people” being in power; which sounds too much like the House GOP to me. The other is an argument for small “d” democracy, which is always harder than it looks.
