I’m Old Enough To Remember…

...when Serious Americans thought Thomas Friedman was a Serious Thinker.

And we wonder how we got to where we are today.

  1. The invisible hand of the marketplace was going to fix everything, including conflict, war, pollution, poverty, you name it! The idolatry of the invisible hand of the marketplace is a wonderful faith to have, it asks absolutely nothing of you other than to make as much money as possible. The invisible hand would take care of the rest. Such wisdom! At least those of us that believed in older faiths understood that you prayed to god for strength and guidance, and then you had to get up and do your part to make it happen. Work for peace, practice justice, feed and cloth the poor. No Lexus or olive tree in sight!

A friend that is a professional historian compared the Beijing Olympics to the Berlin Olympics of 1936. We have Xi, the Chinese premier who wants to recreate an expansionist Chinese dynasty, and Putin who wants to recreate the Russian empire. History doesn't repeat, but it sure has an interesting echo.
