Yeah, the Ranger program started inauspiciously, but between its successful landings and those of Surveyor (one of which was a focal point for Apollo 12's surface activity), we learned a lot. Still, the Moon is larger than Africa, and we've barely explored it, so it's great that we've got so many people continuing missions of discovery.
