Mourning Becomes America

Remain calm! All is Well!

And honestly, it's not working for Trump, why would it work for New York state? Besides:

Are Germany, South Korea, and Italy ALL overreacting?

Clearly there is nothing to worry about.

And yes, we can see him:

“So the president, of course, with this crisis upon us, with the universities being shut down, with this health care crisis at our doorstep, the president has actually decided to tweet about our show,” [Joe] Scarborough said, moments after the president posted his tweet. “So that’s where the president’s mind is.”

“Donald, I’ve asked you this for years,” he added. “Please don’t watch our show, it is better for you. You know it is, it is better for you. It is not better for us, because we’ve had record ratings this — well, the past several years. But we think it is better for America that you just keep watch watching ‘Fox & Friends.’ You say you do, everybody that works with you tells me that you watch us every day — not good for your health, okay? I’m not like the surgeon general, but I can tell you that you watching ‘Morning Joe’ every day is really bad for your mental health. So we ask if you will please, as a service to the United States of America, and those senior citizens who we’re trying to protect, we ask that you watch ‘Fox & Friends,’ don’t watch us. Stay focused and do what’s best for America.”
...

“He is worried about a cable news show,” he said. “That is like, dude — that is depressing.”

More evidence the Deep State is international and hates Donald Trump. No, I'm not exaggerating that:

And if you're wondering who's on first:  they don't know, either.

Yes, they can do that because immigration courts are not Art. III courts (independent of the Administration or the Legislature).  But did they do that?

However on Tuesday morning— just four hours after the Miami Herald published this story—a Department of Justice spokesman contacted the Herald to say that the “the signs shouldn’t have been removed. It’s now being rectified.”

Officials declined to discuss why the email was sent in the first place, and who told the chief immigration judge to issue the directive.

The email comes after the National Association of Immigration Judges — the union that represents U.S. immigration judges— sent a message to immigration judges suggesting that they post a coronavirus precaution flyer produced by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in public areas of the courts.

There was an e-mail from the "acting chief immigration judge" (because God forbid anyone in this administration actually be doing the job they are appointed to and approved for) telling courtrooms to remove the posters.  Now they are being told to put them back up.  And why were they told to pull them down in the first place?  Because Trump needed to talk about his border wall?

If anyone knows, they aren't telling.
Yeah, that's very likely.

And in semi-related news:

Let's recall that Bernie AND Warren together got less than 30% of the primary vote in total, while Biden, Klobuchar, Buttigieg, et al., split the remaining 70+%.  Now that it's down to Biden v. Bernie, it's really not the work of deep forces and mysterious cabals that Biden is claiming the lion's share of the vote (in reality or in polls).  It's the inevitability of so many candidates dropping out and leaving the vote to anyone not named Bernie.  He was winning because the field was so divided.  He's not winning anymore because there's only one candidate against him, and that candidate is more popular with the party.  Unless you're going to seriously insist that voters in South Carolina and Texas and a few other states, are corporate stooges and operatives for the Democratic "establishment," whatever that is.  Indeed, this is the most anti-democratic argument I can imagine.  In order to save democracy, we must destroy democracy?  Feh.

And seriously, the Deep State/Democratic Establishment reaches into Idaho, North Dakota, and Mississippi?
Get real.

We now return to our regularly scheduled crisis, already in progress:

Stay home!  Read blogs! Or just wash your hands.

But still the International Deep State plots against Trump!

Statistics are anti-Trump, too!

Well, at least we're in good hands:

But it's okay, there is a plan!

Trump has said he will announce an "economic plan" today to respond to the coronavirus situation, which includes not just the stock market plunge but things like this:
Administration officials are surprised by this, as there is no plan. Of course, the plan is what Trump just tweeted. "Payroll Tax Cut!"

Just what the country needs right now. Although among politicians, the real contagion is Trumpism:

During an interview with Fox News, [Rep. Michael] McCaul [R-TX] said that shutting down the Capitol Building over virus fears would not be “the right message to the world” even though at least six lawmakers have quarantined themselves after they came into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

“I don’t think it’s time to panic,” he insisted. “The risk is still low. To put it in perspective, we had 350 million cases of the flu this year alone in the United States and somewhere between 20,000 to 50,000 deaths.”

“Not to say that this virus is not serious,” he added. “We take it very serious. It’s very contagious.”

According to the CDC, there are between 9 million and 45 million cases of influenza in the United States each year. Between 12,000 and 61,000 of those cases result in death.

The Census Bureau estimates the U.S. population in 2020 to be approximately 329 million people.
So, you see, we all had the flu last year, some of us more than once, and only 50,000 of us died!  No big deal!

And just to keep you up-to-date on what to REALLY worry about:

Not to mention the stress on healthcare workers when hospitals are running at full capacity, or beyond.

Makes you wonder how the human race got this far.

  1. Rudderless. The Federal government is rudderless. Trump himself is incapable of action, but he manages to neuter anyone else that can act too.

I contrast this with the administration of my second daughters university. We have been getting at least daily updates for weeks (including weekends, while the CDC doesn't update their website on weekends. Incredible). They are working with the state health department, their own hospital experts, synthesizing the information and making clear decisions. Decisions, guidelines, instructions, recommendations, given in direct language. These have changed, based on new information, but that is fine. You have a sense of thoughtful leadership. My current (not much longer) university employer has unfortunately not been helpful at all, but they are finally starting to pull themselves together, I think in the face of a lack of leadership from anywhere else.

At the top of our government however, rudderless.

  2. One of the doctors on my sister's case said he's never seen the CDC in such disarray as it is now. And he's had some experience with them in the past. Trump, the Republicans have done a heck of a lot to invalidate the theories of neo-classical economics in the past several years. Not that it will teach them anything.
