1968

In no particular order:

Assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy (John Kennedy was assassinated 5 years earlier.  Everyone still remembered.)

Police riot in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention

The Tet Offensive

The My Lai massacre

Nixon runs on his "secret plan" to end the Vietnam War (the war ended in 1975, after Nixon won re-election and then resigned from office, in 1974).

It has been said that America in 1968 was on the brink of the collapse of social order and governance.  I was only 13.  I just remember it was a very scary year.

And "Democracy is on fire" today?  The American Experiment is over?  The Republic will fall if Trump is not impeached and removed from office instanter?  Trump is so incompetent he can't even drum up a "Gulf of Tonkin" to justify his saber-rattling against Iraq (anybody who believes Trump will start aware with anybody bigger than Grenada is not serious, IMHO).

I don't like it, but I think we'll last another 20 months.
