Yeah, We Really Can Do Without Chuck Grassley

My daughter is as white as white, and it annoys me she will see this.*

We’ve really got to confront the issue of old people in our society. And I say that as an old person. We are keeping people alive longer. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t retire them. And yes, I’m thinking of Sen. Feinstein, too.  But mostly, this week, Sen. Grassley:
A CNN panel on Thursday roasted Senate Republicans for using what host Jake Tapper described as the "Sideshow Bob defense" to excuse former President Donald Trump's failed efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Tapper singled out Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who defended the former president by saying that he eventually backed off his threat to fire multiple Department of Justice officials and replace them with people who would do his bidding to stop the election from being certified.

"Chuck Grassley, who in the past has stood up for moral causes and been one of the biggest boosters of whistleblowers in the history of congress, is out there saying... 'Yes, President Trump talked about committing a coup but he didn't really actually do it.'"

He then turned to Washington Post reporter Olivier Knox to ask him to explain how similar tactics were used by Simpsons villain Sideshow Bob.

"One of the villains is imprisoned for trying to kill Bart Simpson, and in one scene is shown on the phone angrily deploring his fate saying, 'Attempted murder? What is that? Do they give out a Nobel Prize for attempted chemistry?' The idea being if he was thwarted in his efforts to kill Bart, therefore he is innocent."

The old saw is:  "Treason doth never prosper.  What's the reason?/For if it prosper, none dare call it treason."  It's the perfect example of a crime which is only prosecuted when it fails to achieve its end, or the conspirators decide at the last minute not to carry it out.  If they succeed, it's not a crime.  Well, not anymore; what new government is going to prosecute itself for treason against the failed government?  If it doesn't succeed, obviously the failure to succeed is no defense to the charge.

Same here.

Really time for Chuck Grassley to be put out to pasture.

  1. Chuck Grassley has always been what he is now, he's just a little more senile than he used to be while he was the picture of sanctimonious evil. Every time I am tempted to blame Iowans for the like of him and the others they elect, I remember my state's record of sending the banality of evil to the Senate.
