This is a feature of the system, not a bug. Created mainly by the Supreme Court interpreting Art. III to say federal judges are appointed for life unless they are removed through impeachment. It doesn’t say that, but they said it does, and here we are.Why Roberts wants to make Thomas’s corruption his own is a story I’d like to read. By refusing to have Thomas fully investigated & held accountable he is extending the stain to his own name & the court’s. Is keeping a radical right ideological bench worth any price to him?

Roberts has no authority to investigate Thomas, nor any investigative agency to do the investigation. He can’t order the FBI to do one, and he can’t order Thomas to tell all or leave the bench. See Art. III , above, and the fact “Chief Justice” is a constitutional title and nothing more.
As I said before, Abe Fortas was forced to resign because John Mitchell threatened to prosecute him and his wife, who had her own legal career. That was not a “plea deal,” because charges were never filed. That was blackmail. Should Merrick Garland open an investigation of Thomas? The way the story’s going, I’d say yes. But what if Thomas resigns, whining all the way? Drop the investigation (proving it was “political”), or continue (proving it’s malicious)?
Yeah, this is all kinds of ugly. What it isn’t, is easily resolved.
