"Different presidents will differ on what exactly best advances the national interest. But Trump didn’t even try in this Zelensky call. He instead deployed the United States’ diplomatic capital to advance a partisan political agenda." https://t.co/Ksu0tMYB89— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) September 26, 2019
Which sort of puts this in perspective:
NEW: Ukrainian officials understood discussion of Biden probe was a condition for any phone call between Pres. Trump and Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskiy, an adviser to Zelenskiy tells @ABC News. https://t.co/QxCp4ytCTF from @Reevellp and @lcbruggeman— ABC News Investigates (@ABCInvestigates) September 26, 2019
And why did they know that was the condition?
NEW - in April phone call with Zelensky, the details of which haven't been previously reported, Trump also urged the Ukranian leader to coordinate with Giuliani as he did in July call, and said they should work to root out "corruption" https://t.co/pHgYXMHXsB— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) September 26, 2019
I think we're going to find out just how stupid Donald Trump is. And the Nixonian defense of "What did the President know, and when did he know it?" is not going to work as well for Trump. He's defenestrated the White House staff, reduced it to a shadow of its former self. Kind of hard to say gremlins in the basement of the West Wing (or Oliver North) were going rogue on some of this, or anything else that comes up, since Trump is the sole person in charge.
He's going to find out just how lonely it is at the top.
